Explain the concept of science (meaning and branches of science)

Science has three main branches. Each branch studies different things.

1. Biology

Biology is the branch of science that deals with living things. Living things include plants and animals.

Example: When you observe a mango tree, you are studying biology because the tree is a living thing.

2. Physics

Physics is the branch of science that deals with matter in relation to energy. Energy comes in different forms like heat, light, and electricity. The sun is the main source of energy.

Example: A solar panel uses energy from the sun to produce electricity. This is physics in action.

3. Chemistry

Chemistry is the branch of science that deals with the composition and properties of matter. It also studies how matter changes from one form to another.

Matter exists in three states:

• Solid – example: stone, sugar
• Liquid – example: water, milk
• Gas – example: air, oxygen

Example: When ice melts into water, chemistry helps us understand this change.

Look at the picture of a pupil using a mobile phone. This shows science at work. The mobile phone is a tool made using scientific knowledge. It uses electricity (physics) and is made from different materials (chemistry). When you use it to call your friend, you are applying science!

In Tanzania, science is used everywhere in daily life. For example, when a farmer uses a solar panel to pump water for crops, they are applying knowledge from physics. Similarly, when a doctor at the hospital uses a microscope to check a patient's blood sample, biology and chemistry are both at work to help diagnose the disease and provide treatment.
