Use these polite phrases to ask someone the way:

• Excusez-moi, monsieur/madame! — Excuse me, sir/ma'am!
• Pardon, je suis perdu(e). — Sorry, I am lost.
• Où est... ? — Where is...?
• Pour aller à... ? — How do I get to...?
• C'est loin d'ici ? — Is it far from here?

Examples:

• "Pour aller au marché, s'il vous plaît?" — How do I get to the market, please?
• "Où se trouve la banque?" — Where is the bank?
• "Le stade est loin d'ici?" — Is the stadium far from here?

When someone asks you for directions, use these phrases:

• Allez tout droit. — Go straight ahead.
• Tournez à droite. — Turn right.
• Tournez à gauche. — Turn left.
• Prenez la première rue. — Take the first street.
• Prenez la deuxième rue à gauche. — Take the second street on the left.
• C'est juste en face de. — It is just opposite.
• C'est à côté de. — It is next to.

Example from the textbook: In Dialogue 2, Upendo tells Njoroge: "Va tout droit, puis prends la deuxième rue à gauche. Enfin, le stade est juste en face de toi." (Go straight ahead, then take the second street on the left. Finally, the stadium is just in front of you.)

In French, we also use the four cardinal directions to give or describe locations:

• le nord — north
• le sud — south
• l'est — east
• l'ouest — west

Useful phrases:

• "Allez au nord." — Go north.
• "La route du nord" — The north road
• "Mtwara est au sud de la Tanzanie." — Mtwara is in the south of Tanzania.

When giving directions, we use the imperative form of the verb. This tells someone to do something.

Note: In French, we use "Va" (go) for a friend, but "Allez" when speaking politely or to more than one person.

2. Daudi gives directions using "Prenez" (Take) and "Allez" (Go)

In everyday life in Tanzania, you can use these French directions when visiting French-speaking tourists or when traveling to French-speaking countries in Africa. For example, if you are working at a hotel in Zanzibar and a French-speaking guest asks for directions to the beach, you can say: "Allez tout droit, puis tournez à gauche. La plage est juste en face de l'hôtel." (Go straight ahead, then turn left. The beach is just in front of the hotel.) This helps you assist visitors and improve tourism services in your community.
