Read and write the words used in introducing oneself

Here are the main words you need to know:

• هَذَا is used with masculine nouns (boys, men, things that are masculine in Arabic)
• هَذِهِ is used with feminine nouns (girls, women, things that are feminine in Arabic)

Examples:

• هَذَا طَالِبٌ (This is a student - boy)
• هَذِهِ طَالِبَةٌ (This is a student - girl)
• هَذَا مُعَلِّمٌ (This is a teacher - male)
• هَذِهِ مُعَلِّمَةٌ (This is a teacher - female)

When two students meet, they can introduce themselves like this:

Student 1: مَا اسْمُكَ؟ (What is your name?) Student 2: اسْمِي سَلِيمُ (My name is Salimu) Student 1: مَنْ أَنْتَ؟ (Who are you?) Student 2: أَنَا طَالِبٌ (I am a student)

• أَنَا = I
• اسْمِي = my name is
• عُمَرُ = Umar (a name)

1. Read aloud each new word several times until you can say it clearly.
2. Copy the words in your notebook, paying attention to how each letter is written.
3. Practice with a friend by taking turns asking and answering the introduction questions.
4. Match words to pictures - look at a picture of a person and say what they are using هَذَا or هَذِهِ.

• Always start your introduction with أَنَا when talking about yourself
• Use مَا اسْمُكَ when asking someone's name (for boys)
• Use هَذَا when pointing to a boy or a masculine object
• Use هَذِهِ when pointing to a girl or a feminine object
