A classroom is 8 m long, 6 m wide, and 3 m high. Find:
a) The surface area
b) The volume
Solution:
a) Surface Area = 2(lw + lh + wh)
=2(8×6+8×3+6×3)
=2(48+24+18)
=2(90)=180 m2
b) Volume = l × w × h
=8×6×3=144 m3
Example 2: Cube
A sugar cube has sides of 2 cm. Find:
a) The surface area
b) The volume
Solution:
a) Surface Area = 6s²
=6×22=6×4=24 cm2
b) Volume = s³
=23=8 cm3
Example 3: Cylinder
A cylindrical water tank has a radius of 7 cm and a height of 10 cm. Find:
a) The surface area
b) The volume (use π = 22/7)
Solution:
a) Surface Area = 2πr(r + h)
=2×722×7×(7+10)
=44×17=748 cm2
b) Volume = πr²h
=722×72×10
=722×49×10
=22×7×10=1,540 cm3
