Strong acids and bases ionize completely in water. For example, HCl in water produces H3O+, and NaOH produces OH−. The self-ionization of water is suppressed due to the common ion effect.
Example 1
If 0.001 M NaOH is added to water, the concentration of OH−=0.001 M. The concentration of H3O+ is:
[H3O+]=[OH−]Kw=0.0011×10−14=1×10−11 M
Neutralization reactions
Neutralization occurs when H3O+ from an acid reacts with OH− from a base to form water. The final solution may be acidic, basic, or neutral depending on the amounts of H3O+ and OH− remaining after the reaction.
Example 2
What is the pH of a solution obtained by mixing 100 cm³ of 0.015 M HCl and 50 cm³ of 0.01 M Ba(OH)2?
Solution:
Moles of H3O+ from HCl = 0.015×0.1=0.0015 moles
Moles of OH− from Ba(OH)2 = 0.01×0.05×2=0.001 moles
Excess H3O+=0.0015−0.001=0.0005 moles
Concentration of H3O+=0.1+0.050.0005=0.0033 M
pH=−log(0.0033)≈2.48
The solution is acidic.
