Water auto-ionizes by transferring a proton from one water molecule to another, producing H3O+\text{H}_3\text{O}^+ and OH\text{OH}^-:

2H2OH3O++OH2\text{H}_2\text{O} \rightleftharpoons \text{H}_3\text{O}^+ + \text{OH}^-

The concentration of H2O\text{H}_2\text{O} is much larger than the two ions and is constant at a given temperature. The product of their concentrations is defined as:

At 25°C, Kw=1×1014K_w = 1 \times 10^{-14}. In pure water, [H3O+]=[OH]=1×107 M[\text{H}_3\text{O}^+] = [\text{OH}^-] = 1 \times 10^{-7}\ \text{M}, making water neutral.
