Sources of Magnetic Fields

Magnetic fields arise from electric currents. Various configurations produce different field distributions. Below are important laws and applications.

The Biot–Savart Law gives the magnetic field dBd\vec{B} due to a small current element at a point PP:

Vector form:

Definitions:

  • μ0=4π×107Tm/A\mu_0 = 4\pi \times 10^{-7} \, \text{Tm/A}
  • μ=μ0μr\mu = \mu_0 \mu_r: Permeability in a medium
