The projection lantern forms images of slides or camera film onto a distant screen. The film or slide to be projected is inverted and highly illuminated.
Optical arrangement of projection lantern
- The slice or film to be projected is inverted and highly illuminated.
- The concave mirror helps to concentrate the light, which would otherwise be partly wasted.
- The lamp is placed at the principal focus of the concave mirror.
- The heat filter reduces the heat at falling on the slide or film to avoid it overheating.
- Since the image of the projection lantern is highly magnified, it would not be very bright if there were not enough illumination.
- The condenser directs a maximum amount of light from the source of the slide and produce uniform illumination the screen. (The condenser is a double in order to reduce chromatic aberration).
- The projection lens forms the image of the slide on the screen.
- The light source is usually located at a distance of 2f from a condenser and invited so that the image on the screen is upright (erect).
A projection lantern uses a lens to project an enlarged image of a small object (e.g. a slide) onto a screen. The magnification (M) is a measure of how much larger (or smaller) the image appears compared to the original object.
Formula for magnification:
Magnification is given by:
M=uv
Where:
- M = magnification
- v = image distance (distance from lens to screen)
- u = object distance (distance from lens to slide)
Also,
M=hohi
Where:
- hi = height (or size) of image
- ho = height (or size) of object (slide)
Example
A projection lantern uses a slide of size 2 cm × 2 cm to project an image of size 100 cm × 100 cm onto a screen 12 m (1200 cm) away from the lens.
Find:
- How far from the lens the slide must be (object distance u)
- The approximate focal length of the projection lens.
Step 1: Calculate magnification
M=hohi=2100=50
Also from magnification formula:
M=uv
So:
uv=50⇒u=50v=501200=24cm
Answer:
Object distance u=24cm
Step 2: Find focal length (f)
Use the lens formula:
f1=v1+u1
f1=12001+241
Convert to common denominator:
f1=12001+50=120051
f=511200≈23.53cm
- Focal length of lens = approximately 23.5 cm
- Projection of films, slides and transparencies,
- projection of opaque objects, i.e. episcopacy projection,
- used in searchlights and headlights,
- used in projection apparatus in industry for gauge and screw thread testing,
- used in physical experiments such as projection of a spectrum,
- used in polarization experiments and interference experiments
