Radicals

Radicals are the opposite of exponents. For example, when we raise 2 by 2, we get 4, but taking the square root of 4 gives us 2. Similarly, raising a number using any exponent is the same way we can find the root of that number.

When a number is expressed as a product of equal factors, each of the factors is called the root of that number. For example:

  • 25 = 5×55 \times 5, so 5 is the square root of 25.
  • 64 = 8×88 \times 8, so 8 is the square root of 64.
  • 216 = 6×6×66 \times 6 \times 6, so 6 is the cube root of 216.
  • 81 = 3×3×3×33 \times 3 \times 3 \times 3, so 3 is the fourth root of 81.
  • 1024 = 4×4×4×4×44 \times 4 \times 4 \times 4 \times 4, so 4 is the fifth root of 1024.

The symbol for the nth root is xn\sqrt[n]{x}, where \sqrt{} is called a radical and nn is the index, which indicates the root to be found. If the index is 2, the symbol represents the square root of a number, and it is simply written as x\sqrt{x}, without the index 2.

The nth root of a number xx is expressed in power form as:

xn=x1n\sqrt[n]{x} = x^{\frac{1}{n}}
