The resistance of a wire depends on:

  • Length (L) of the conductor
  • Cross-sectional area (A) of the conductor

Resistance, R, is directly proportional to the length (L) and inversely proportional to the area (A):

RLAR=LAR \propto \frac{L}{A} \Rightarrow R = \frac{L}{A}

To introduce a constant of proportionality (J), which is the resistivity of the material:

R=JLAorJ=RALR = J \frac{L}{A} \quad \text{or} \quad J = \frac{RA}{L}

Resistivity (J) is defined as the resistance of a conductor that is 1 metre long and has a cross-sectional area of 1 m².

Example 1

The resistance of a copper wire is 10Ω. Find the resistance of a copper wire of the same length but with twice the radius.

Let original resistance be:

R = \frac{JL}{\pi r^2} = 10\,\Omega \tag{i}

New wire with radius 2r:

R' = \frac{JL}{\pi (2r)^2} = \frac{JL}{4\pi r^2} \tag{ii}

Divide (ii) by (i):

R10=JL/4πr2JL/πr2=14R=104=2.5Ω\frac{R'}{10} = \frac{JL/4\pi r^2}{JL/\pi r^2} = \frac{1}{4} \Rightarrow R' = \frac{10}{4} = 2.5\,\Omega
